An exotic car rally, beautiful women, and gorgeous weather in sunny Southern California? We’re in! This recent installment of Targa Trophy’s aptly coined San Diego Experience, was structured differently than those in years past, but it still had a true Targa Trophy feel to it. The Targa Trophy rallies were gauged and judged in a time, speed, and distance format in the past. However, this year, the San Diego rally was based solely on checkpoints. Time wasn’t recorded, speed wasn’t a factor, and the distance wasn’t checked. The documentation (or proof, if you will) used was in the form of photos taken at each checkpoint with specific instructions and the receipts obtained as evidence. The checkpoints were very creative, from running into a GNC store to purchase an energy shot to running onto a golf course and teeing off to snapping a photo of the Cardiff Kook statue. This new model of rally really changed the event in a good way, because it’s much more than your horsepower and driving skills alone. You literally had to map out and strategize how to get from one checkpoint to the next as quickly as possible and back on the road. When everything was said and done, the Targa Trophy participants were lodged at the Hard Rock Hotel in the beautiful Gas Lamp District in downtown San Diego. After the rally concluded, the awards were passed out and endless spirits flowed until the wee hours of the a.m. In all, this event was thrilling, engaging, and definitely not a spectator sport. We definitely cannot wait for the next installment.
